Research Training Groups (Graduiertenkollegs) are university training programmes for graduate students. They enable students to produce their doctoral theses within a collaborative research environment. Research Training Groups integrate the theses into a comprehensive research programme and actively involve students in a structured accompanying study programme.

The students of a Research Training group are supervised by the professors of the hosting universities. These professors offer research topics to the students within the global research programme of the Training Group.

They are supported by generous scholarships. Funding for travel and participation in conferences is also available.

Research Training Groups are funded by the German Research Council. Any German university can apply for this funding, in any topic, and competition is very strong. Currently only about 10% of the applications are funded.

More information on Research Training Groups can be found here (pages of the German Research Council).
